Iron Boost IV

Iron IV Infusion

This medicine treats "iron-poor" blood (anemia) in people with long-term kidney disease. You may need extra iron because of blood loss during kidney dialysis. Your body may also need more iron if you use erythropoietin to help make new red blood cells. Iron is an important part of your red blood cells and is needed to transport oxygen. Many patients with kidney disease cannot get enough iron from food and require injections.

Overview Information

Iron is a mineral. Most of the iron in the body is found in the hemoglobin of red blood cells and the myoglobin of muscle cells. Iron is needed for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide and has other vital roles in the body. Iron is most commonly used to prevent and treat anemia caused by low iron levels. It is also used for anemia caused by abnormal heavy bleeding during menstrual periods (menorrhagia) and pregnancy.

How does it work?

Iron helps red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to cells all over the body. Iron also plays a role in many vital functions in the body.

Iron Deficiency Directory

Iron helps your body get oxygen through the bloodstream. Fewer red blood cells can be made without iron, which causes anemia. Iron levels can get too low because of bleeding, heavy menstruation, or other problems, such as ulcers. It can also be caused by simply not getting enough iron through your diet. Common symptoms of iron deficiency include fatigue, dizziness, moodiness, and other symptoms. Treatments include taking iron supplements.
